Monthly Forecast for April 2008

April presents with some relatively mellow astrological weather.

Oh, except for the beginning of the month.

Pluto “stations” (appears to stop in the sky) on the 2nd, giving us all a taste of the underworld. Pluto stations tend to create situations where power struggles intensify and the need for control, sometimes at any cost, comes to the surface. Look for the effects to be rippling out a couple of days in either direction, perhaps making for a very questionable April Fool’s Day this year.

The energy from the station will certainly be carried forward for a day, as Mercury squares Pluto on the 3rd. This is a kind of David and Goliath aspect, or at least anyone involved in power struggles with The Man is likely to see it that way. Not a good day to apply for a loan, or initiate any moves against those in power. Cleverness can help, and Mercury in Aries is what we might call the “Bugs Bunny” placement. But watch out - Elmer’s got a wewwy wewwy big gun. Huhuhuhuhuhu.

All of the above takes place just before the new moon on the 5th. New moons always have a subtle, inward energy, a concentration of power. It’s really the energy of conception - profound and powerful, but not yet physically visible. With all the Plutonian energy around in the early part of the month, decisions could be made in secret which won’t be seen until later in the month, most likely at the Scorpio full moon on the 20th.

On the 6th, Venus takes off her nun’s habit and puts on her heels, leaving Pisces for Aries. Our collective sense of socialization and connection undergoes a subtle shift, as fun and action begin to take precedence, at least until the 30th. Venus in Aries is said to be a poor placement, but it is outgoing, fun, and sexy, which doesn’t sound too shabby to me.

One caveat, though. No sooner does the Goddess of Love enter Aries than she squares off with a still very powerful Pluto. So, what’s this a good day for? Breaking up is one option, if you’re inclined to do that. Although it might not be the most pleasant thing, it will almost surely be final. It could also get the passion moving in a relationship that’s been a little stagnant. It certainly is not a good day to start bringing up “issues” that you want resolved, although the urge to do so might be almost irresistible. It’s also not a good day to get anything appraised, and artists and designers wouldn’t want to go looking for funding on a day like this.

The sun squares Jupiter while Mercury squares Mars on the 10th. The former can make us want more, more and more, while the latter can lead us to mouth off a little too easily. It’s a high-energy which really begs for a little moderation. For plans that have been a little more carefully thought out, however, it is a good time to start putting things into action, especially as the first quarter moon, always good for action, is on the 12th.

Mercury steps in to square Jupiter on the 13th, another day when we’re likely to say too much. The dynamic energy might be very helpful for anyone giving a lecture or a presentation, although it does fall on a Sunday.

The sun moves into Taurus on the 19th, beginning the second month of spring.

There are some nice aspects between the 18th and 20th, but the big event is the full moon on the 20th. This full moon is in the sign of Scorpio, and is generally considered to be the most “difficult” lunation of the year. The moon prefers to be hidden, rather than full, and Scorpio is a sign which cuts and digs, not really the sort of thing the soft, maternal moon likes. Practically, it suggests that feelings we’d rather keep to ourselves are exposed, and emotions have a kind of cold-wind-on-raw-nerve feel to them. This is a time when you may learn about decisions and plans made for you earlier in the month, and the fact that they were hidden from you can make it that much worse. For those of us without such excitement, these few days are likely to seem just a little more edgy than we’d like. It does fall over the weekend, and Passover on top of that.

By the way, if you miss out on the fun, don’t worry. It just so happens that this year May’s full moon will also be in Scorpio.

The 22nd is altogether different, with Mars in trine to Uranus. New ideas can be put into action, energy is high but controlled, and innovation and change are favored. Although the nicer aspects of the couple of days before might be hidden by the full moon, the helpful winds they send will be adding even more positive energy, so make the most of this day.

We have a series of aspects between Mars, Venus and Jupiter on the 23rd and 24th, making what we call in astrologese a “T-Square.” This is a difficult dynamic, sort of like when two people disagree not only with a third person, but also with each other. It’s like - hey! you know what it’s like? It’s like the way Clinton and Obama both oppose McCain, but they also are competing with each other.

Now, Venus is the Goddess of Love, and Mars is the God of War. Jupiter is the king of the gods, ruler of religion, philosophy and beliefs. In this particular case, because of the way they are configured in the sky, Venus is the odd one out in this triad. The outgoing, sociable and fun energy of Venus in Aries is individualistic and has little patience for social mores, while Mars in Cancer and Jupiter in Capricorn both have a tendency to come down on the more conservative side. Not that either one is happy about it! On a practical level, there is a possibility that this play out as a conflict between what we want to do and feel we have to do. And although Venus in Aries (what we want) is the odd one out, my bet is that we will tend to wind up doing what we please, dealing with the consequences when they come.

Easy aspects prevail through the 28th. Take some time to enjoy a little relative astrological calm.

The 29th has Mercury is square to Neptune, which you can think of as a one-day Mercury retrograde, when getting correct information can be a problem, deals may be less than above board and honest, and confusion and even deception can run high. Don’t make a major purchase for a couple of days on either side of this aspect if you can avoid it, and avoid signing contracts or even coming to a verbal agreement. It is a very good time for meditation, creative thinking and spacing out.

Venus leaves Aries for her home sign of Taurus on the 30th. Venus in Aries wants excitement and action, but Venus in Taurus is supposed to be much better at actually appreciating and enjoying material and sensual things. It’s the difference between gobbling up a piece of cake and really taking the time to savor it.
