Monthly Forecast for January 2009

The new year begins in the shadow of Saturn’s station on the 31st of December. While technically the day before, we will still be feeling the weighty heaviness of Saturn on the 1st, traditionally the great Sunday morning of the entire year (even though it falls on a Thursday).

Mercury changes signs, moving into Aquarius on the 1st. Mercury in Aquarius favors technology and communications, but don’t get too excited, as the Cosmic Messenger is going retrograde from the 11th through February 1st. Click here if you’re not familiar with Mercury retrograde.

On the 3rd, Venus moves into Pisces, a place where she’s more about compassion than romance. Still, her nice aspect to Pluto on the 4th, the day of the first quarter moon, should fire up a few of us. Someone has to keep the species going...

Communication strain might be a theme in the latter part of the month, but things may not go so smoothly on the 5th, either, as Mercury rubs Uranus the wrong way. Not a good day to set up an internet site, or to rely on computer-driven communication. Look for a repeat of the same issues on the 17th, with the final installment of the story coming on February 20th.

Also on the 5th, Jupiter moves from Capricorn into Aquarius. This lightens his mood considerably, and we’re likely to see progressive social causes get a boost in 2009. Those with strong Jupiter connections (Sags - are you listening?) will probably feel that things are moving their way a little more easily.

On the 6th, watch for our actions to get in the way of our dreams, as Mars and Neptune form an irritating semisquare. What we dream of having and how we go about getting it don’t necessarily work in harmony with each other.

Communications get strained once again on the 8th. Here it is Saturn that is putting the screws on Mercury, so don’t use this day to communicate important information to those in authority. Not a good day to deliver a report, ask for a raise, or make a business agreement. There could be delays and lost data, and perhaps car and computer trouble. This day is repeated in reverse on the 14th, so look for a second installment of any issues that show up. Note that Part 3 isn’t until February 18th, however, so trouble that comes up around the 8th - 14th of January might have to wait more than a month to really be resolved.

The 9th favors innovation and creativity. It’s just a day before the full moon on the 10th, so energy should be high.

Once again, Mercury goes retrograde on the 11th. I know I said it before, but that’s what Mercury retrograde is all about.

Now a Mercury station is not conducive to things going very smoothly in many areas of life, but also on the 11th, we have a nice aspect between the sun and Saturn. This should favor work within “the system”.

If you have something to say which you haven’t, recently, use the 18th to open up and communicate what needs to be said.

Venus, planet of love and relationship, has been quietly sailing along through Pisces since her meet-up with Pluto on the 4th. Towards the end of the month, she gets busy. The fun starts on the 21st, when she makes a difficult aspect to Jupiter. The question is, what do we value, and what do we believe? Are these two things moving us towards the same goal, or different ones? If nothing else, we can expect a burst of energy, moving us forward in our relationships and also in financial matters.

How we use that energy will become an issue on the 22nd, as Venus and Mars both aspect Uranus. The urge to try something new and different is strong, and we can seek out novelty in romance and finance. Certainly, this isn’t the time to stick to the tried and true. The so-called danger is novelty for its own sake, but perhaps the real danger lies in failing to move out of old ruts. For those of you who’ve been on a wild ride of some kind since late March of 2008, here’s your chance to get off, or buy a ticket for another go-round.

The mood shifts from Uranian freedom and experimentation to Saturnian seriousness on the 24th. Our high-flying ideas come at a cost, and Saturn offers us the bill. Venus stands opposite Saturn, and the two ask each other “is it worth it?” The contrast of the new and different followed by heavy decisions is something we’re all becoming familiar with lately. Those who have been dealing with relationships where freedom versus commitment is the issue will feel the pot coming to a boil around this time. A few nice aspects to Mars, however, do allow us to act with confidence, if ever we can make up our minds.

The energy through the 24th and 25th will have us wondering about who’s really in charge, at every level. Who really rules? We can see a “king” at some points, and democracy at others. Or maybe it’s the rich? The famous? Some occult conspiracy? Or worse yet, maybe no one is really in charge at all...

That intense energy, which questions deeply what we are moving towards, is given extra power by being next to a solar eclipse on the 26th. This one is only visible in the southern hemisphere, but the energy will affect us all to some degree. Aquarians may find it a little hard to maintain their balance. The tendency to follow the rules is thrown into turmoil by uncertainty about what those rules really are.

The next installment of the month’s drama comes on the 27th and 30th, as Jupiter makes tense aspects to Uranus and Saturn. Once again, we find who wants to be king, who the “king makers” are, and what rules are (or are not) operating behind the scenes.
