Monthly Forecast for August 2008

August kicks off with a solar eclipse on the 1st. Solar eclipses are powerful new moons whose effects are sometimes not felt for a while. This eclipse occurs in early Leo, and should have the most power for those with planets in early Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus.

As the eclipse is only visible in the far north, the effects might be more subtle than usual. Still, we can feel the tension building in the weeks before an eclipse, and will continue to be riding a wave of extra energy all the way through the lunar eclipse on the 16th, and for about a week after that.

Remember that the issues which come up during an eclipse are real, but they are also seen under a kind of magnifying glass, so while you can see clearly, you might get the proportions wrong.

On the 5th, Venus makes an easy trine to Pluto, an aspect which can let passion and sexuality flow into a strong relationship, but which will also make it easier to let go of one which isn’t working out. Contrast this day with the 29th, when Venus and Pluto will be in a square aspect. This day might also ignite passions, but the energy is much harder to handle.

The high-energy continues on the 6th as Mars opposes Uranus. Collectively, we are likely to experience a rash, impulsive energy. Be careful driving, and while physical activity is a decent way to channel the energy, be careful that you don’t overdo it. While we’re in the midst of this impatient aspect, Mercury will oppose Neptune. Thus all of our activity is potentially based on faulty information, so be careful before you burn your bridges (or your britches).

The fist quarter moon is on the 8th. Normally a high-energy time, this month it will probably be lost in the storm of planetary activity. Still, it is a good time to put plans into motion.

On the 13th, Venus conjuncts Saturn, beginning a yearly cycle in which we consider what we really want, and what we’re really getting, in our relationships. This is a “bottom line” type of aspect, which focuses us on what we have rather than the potential we (think we”) see.

On the 15th, the sun opposes Neptune. Once again, don’t expect things to be clear. Our ideas and dreams can soar, but what is real is a great big question mark. The value of Neptune is to get us to think outside of our usual patterns, but we have to wait to see if we’ve been inspired or confused. Mercury’s conjunction to Saturn should put the brakes on any precipitous action, however.

On the day of the lunar eclipse, the 16th, Venus is in a nice trine to Jupiter. While this won’t smooth out all difficulties that might come up in relationships, there ought to be something like a cosmic “get out of jail free” card in the works.

The next day, the 17th, also has an influence on the lunar eclipse, although not necessarily a positive one. Mars is in square to Pluto, a tense aspect if ever there was one. While there is a potential to use this energy by focusing our intentions towards a goal, there is also the possibility that we’ll be pulled towards expressing an almost volcanic rage. Remember that what happens at the collective level doesn’t always have to be mirrored in our own lives. An easy Mercury-Jupiter aspect should at least help us to communicate.

The sun and Pluto are in a nice trine on the 21st, allowing a more easy expression of emotions. Damage done on the 17th could have to wait until now for the repair work to take hold.

August 23rd presents with some fairly intense energy, as Mercury and Venus both oppose Uranus. Either of these aspects can make for an erratic kind of day, Mercury affecting our communications and Venus our relationships and valuables. Together, they make for a day when exploring possibilities and trying something new and different is at the top of the list - and we’re less likely than ever to consider the consequences. This is also the last quarter moon, in early Gemini, which also creates an active atmosphere.

This opposition is the midpoint of the yearly Venus-Uranus cycle which began on March 28th, so those of you who remember significant relationship or money events from around that time (don’t be so exact!) might see the culmination of that issue now.

Mercury goes on to square Pluto on the 27th, an aspect which prompts us to put our cards on the table and say what we’re feeling way down inside. Try to make sure you’re expressing your true feelings about a situation and not just venting repressed anger. Of course, it is a very good day to vent old issues, if you can find the proper venue.

On the 29th, it’s time for Venus to square Pluto. While her aspect to Saturn this month is the beginning of the cycle, and her aspect to Uranus is the culmination of that cycle, this is last major aspect of the yearly Venus-Pluto cycle. Venus-Saturn is about building something solid and “real” in our relationships and Venus-Uranus is about seeing beyond our limitations within our partnerships. Venus-Pluto is about getting what we want and need in our relationships.

This tense aspect really puts our partnerships, and perhaps also our finances, to the test. What is it that we really value? What do we really want? Are we getting it? Because this is a square, we might be prone to “square off” against those we see as limiting us. This aspect certainly suggests that we might break off a relationship we see as unfulfilling, but we can also move away from partners who we find controlling and manipulative.

The second new moon of August is on the 30th. As always, the time before the new moon is ideally suited to rest, meditation, and reflection.
