Monthly Forecast for March 2008

March begins with a subtle - maybe - aspect, as Mars crosses into Cancer on the 4th. This point is on the “world axis” and is opposite to Pluto’s entry into Capricorn in January. Mars acts as a trigger for major shifts like that, so keep an eye on the day to see how things go - it’s likely to say a lot about the patterns for the near future.

The 6th is a day of relative calm. The sun and Jupiter make a helpful sextile, good for studying, reading, and other learning activities. Venus makes her annual conjunction to Neptune on the same day. Venus/Neptune gives a somewhat spiritual feeling to love, and if things go well, indicates a kind of universal compassion, much needed sandwiched between hard aspects. If things don’t go so well, this aspect can indicate deception and illusions in love. At worst, we could run into someone who is essentially a romantic con artist, but more likely this is just a day when it’s easier to have a crush on someone... in the sign of Aquarius, it could be someone on the internet.
As Venus/Neptune can really get you pining for what you can’t have, you can make an appropriate celebration of the day by downloading (from a respectable source, please) The Bridges of Madison County or Castaway. Or you listen to Chopin or Joni Mitchell. You get the idea.
Those who are really up for making the most of the day can read something by St. Theresa of Avila, or maybe Caroline Myss’s Entering the Castle. You don’t have to finish the book in one day, as Venus will shortly be entering Pisces.

The next day, March 7th, is a new moon, usually a calm time, good for retreating to your room for meditation. Today, however, Mars opposes Pluto himself. Look for passions to be running high, with the potential for anger and outbursts very strong. Mars and Pluto are both in protective and conservative signs, but these bad boys don’t like being hemmed in by the rules. The usual calm of the new moon becomes something more like an eclipse, a heavy tension that might just break open. Of course, no one says anger is the only passion...

On the 8th, only a day later, the sun meets up with Uranus for their annual conjunction. This is another high-energy aspect, favoring the new and different over the tried and true.

A very different aspect is in place on the 9th, and it will blend with the aspects of the previous days in unpredictable ways. Mercury meets up in conjunction with Neptune, an aspect essentially like a one-day (or two or three day) Mercury retrograde. Judgment is likely to be off, and things may not be what they seem. Avoid business deals and any type of speculation. Actually, this aspect is a little more difficult than the simple confusion and mishaps of the retrograde, as it can favor intentional deception. If you’re concerned that Loose Lips Sink Ships (does anyone even remember the referent for that?), watch out, as information tends to leak out when Mercury and Neptune get together. Watch your credit card. I’d say to shred your important documents, but you might have a lottery ticket in with them....

Venus enters Pisces on the 12th. The Goddess of Love is quite happy in the sign of the Fish (she’s “exalted” there, as we astrologers say). Venus in Pisces isn’t so much about personal, romantic love, though, but more focused (or unfocused) on universal connection. Much like her conjunction to Neptune on the 6th, Venus in Pisces is expressed best through agape rather than eros, and mysticism more than romanticism.

On the 13th, Venus makes a creative sextile to Pluto. It’s not a bad day to try to get a mortgage or something else you need from a bank, and artistic endeavors can be favored by people in power. It should be helpful in relationships, as well.

From the 14th to April 2nd, Mercury will be in Pisces. Read about Mercury/Neptune, above, and think the same but less. Electric (Gemini) and earthy (Virgo) Mercury isn’t too happy in watery Pisces, although it’s not as intense as a retrograde or a hard aspect to Neptune. In fact, it is a good time to read on more spiritual topics, visit a psychic, and to tune into the aspects of the mind which are not expressed in words.

The 14th also features a nice aspect between Mars and Saturn, which should help in putting plans into action and getting support from authority. However, Saturn is retrograde, and Mars is in Cancer, so neither one of them is really at the top of his game. It could work out nicely for otherwise-in-trouble baseball players...

The 15th and 16th are a roller coaster, one which might involve relationships or money. We get the big drop on the 15th, as Venus opposes Saturn, an aspect which demands that we pay attention to the bottom line in everything we do. But the next day, we get lifted up by a trine between Venus and Mars, an aspect which harmonizes values and drive, desire and energy, love and passion. So, we’re asked to stop and consider if we want to go forward. If the answer is yes, we get a boost, if the answer is no, the trine will help make the release easier.

On the 17th and 18th, the Cosmic Messenger does a repeat of the same aspects, as Mercury opposes Saturn, then trines Mars. The same pattern applies, but this time is related to business, commerce, communication.

The sun enters Aries on the 20th at 1:48 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time, signaling the beginning of Spring. Ahhhh.....

But wait, on the 21st, we have a full moon, with the sun and moon in square to Pluto. Full moons, as you probably know if you’ve been reading this page for a while, bring things to light and are a high-energy time. Throw in a tense aspect to Pluto, and we have some real potential for a shakeup, as pent-up energy is released. The news will tell us how this manifests in society, but we’ll see it in our own lives, too, as that which we’ve been holding back comes roaring forth. Think of Popeye, “I can takes so much, and I can’t takes no more!!”

He-ge-ge-ge-geh.

Of course, some of us will be Popeye, and some of us will be Bluto, if you take my meaning. (for more on the subject of cartoons and astrology, click here for a brilliant and amusing article).

Communicating our feelings, or at least talking about value or values, should be easier on the 24th, as Mercury and Venus walk together through the middle degrees of Pisces.

The 27th is another relatively good day to study or do a little exploration, as Mercury sextiles Jupiter then conjuncts Uranus. Novel ideas will find acceptance a little easier, and someone might step in to play the role of helpful uncle or guru. The energy on this day will be kind of quirky, but very creative and overall helpful.

Now it’s Venus’ turn to be walking behind Mercury, as she repeats the same aspects on the 28th. In terms of relationships, this is a good day trying something new, whether within an existing relationship or with someone new. The aspects suggest that we can break out of our usual patterns without much friction, if only for a day or so. This is also a good day for socializing and not at all bad for a business lunch. For creative and artistic purposes, it’s the best astrological weather we’ve seen in a while. Money will be flowing a little easier, too, which should help any and all of the above. The one thing to watch is a tendency to overindulge, especially with sweets, so watch out when the dessert tray comes around (oh, it’s just one day - go ahead).

On March 29th, the last quarter moon is in Capricorn, favoring work-related activities, unless you hit the Kahlua or Ameretto hard on the 28th.

On the 30th, however, the sun squares Mars, and both are square to the moon. To simplify, quarter moons produce action, and the sun in a tense aspect to Mars can “trigger” latent tensions. This is a great day to exercise (but don’t overdo it) or to do anything that requires a high level of energy. Not everyone is going to be ready for today, however, so there are going to be some short tempers in evidence, especially as we’re approaching a Pluto station in early April.

But we’ll deal with that next month...
