Monthly Forecast for October 2008


As in recent months, October follows a lunar schedule, growing after the full moon on September 29th, culminating at the full moon on the 14th, and wrapping up with a new moon on the 28th. We’ll see things coming to a head around the middle of the month again, although hopefully with a little more grace than September. Last month, the financial news was bleak after Pluto and Jupiter went direct on the 10th, and the full moon brought to light the depth of the problems. October has a somewhat more positive energy, although within the context of some major aspects which will be exact in November.

The first aspect of the month is a nice sextile between Mars and Pluto on the 2nd, helping us to accomplish what we need to do and perhaps even get what we want. With Mars in the sign of Libra, we will probably ask politely rather than just taking, but there is a power behind our words. Two days later, on the 4th, Mars enters one of his homes, Scorpio, a placement which sees him playing defense effectively. We can be more cautious with Mars in Scorpio, but also willing to deal with what comes up rather than hiding from it.

On the 5th, Venus and Jupiter put the sex in sextile. These two helpful planets are about social skills and interaction, and a good aspect between them usually signals a good time. Both are hung up in signs where they don’t feel comfortable, however, with the Goddess in Scorpio and Jupiter in Capricorn. There is a charged energy, to be sure, but it’s expression looks to be one of contained passion. This day is probably better for existing relationships than new ones.

The 6th sees the sun in a square to Jupiter, a day where our egos could get out of hand. Watch out for drama kings and queens and overdone expressions of I-Me-Mine. The sun is also meeting up with Mercury (who is thus also squaring Jupiter) on the same day. Mercury is still retrograde, so communication is likely to be at an all-time low, or to put it another way, we are likely to say something more, and other, than what we mean.

Venus, planet of love, relationship and also valuables, is in yet another sextile on the 7th, this time to Saturn. Again, the signs are less than favorable, but the aspect itself is good. We’re able to express emotions and give form to our feelings. Something in the area of love or money which got started back around the 13th of August will have an opportunity to develop further (if you can remember that far back...). This is the day of the first quarter moon, so the laid back sextile will get a little more charge than usual.

The 10th and 11th see even more activity for Venus. On the 10th, she makes a constructive trine to Uranus. This is an excellent time to try something new in relationships, or to let go of a partnership that no longer serves. The 11th is a bit more difficult, as Venus square Neptune, perhaps moving us to follow a dream, but also maybe leading us to confuse a fantasy with reality.

The full moon on the 14th is in the sign of Aries, and we become aware of where we need to take action, and what is beginning in our lives. This full moon comes the day before Mercury stations to go direct on the 15th, which will probably increase the confusion surrounding that event. Venus enters the sign of Sagittarius on the 18th. While she won’t be making any more major aspects after the busy beginning of the month, we’ll still feel her energy as she takes on a more outgoing, sociable costume in the sign of the archer.

The sun is sextile to Pluto on the day of the last quarter moon, the 21st. This placement suggests a controlled and graceful approach to getting what we want. Tensions are possible, but power is expressed subtly.

The sun moves into Scorpio on the 22nd, signaling that we are in the middle of autumn, the time when the leaves come off the trees (in New York) and those bone-chilling rains start.

Mercury, now moving forwards, again squares off against Jupiter on the 26th. Issues that started on the 6th, or as far back as September 8th, can finally be cleared up now, although a final struggle before resolution is not out of the question.

The Scorpio new moon is on the 28th. New moons are always beginnings, and this one is in the sign of endings. Whether that means it’s the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning is an open question, I suppose. Scorpio is the sign of birth as well as death, and this new moon is about getting in touch with those primal realities.

The month ends with Mercury and Neptune in a helpful trine on the 30th, so watch your dreams on the night of the 29th/30th. Watch your driving, too. Mars and Saturn make a sextile late on the 30th, indicating that we have a day when our actions will be effective and guided into productive channels.

The final aspect of the month is a trine between Mars and Uranus on the 31st, making for a somewhat wild and hopefully fun Halloween. Mars/Uranus urges us to act differently, whatever that means to you.
